  •  I agree-as such a collectible, and as a luxury (11+ / 0-)

I don't see how they could be losing money.  It's probably the case that they think they can further maximize profits by taking it to Asia, though I don't see how the quality won't suffer.  The workers in Asia would have to learn from scratch what the Irish have been doing all their lives.

products may be collectibles and be wonderful quality items, but alas most people these days don't have the time/money/inclination to buy that sort of thing.  The companies making such luxury products are still suffering financially, even though one would think that their customers would still have enough resources to continue spending.

Look at Tiffany's, for example -- they just announced that their 2008 holiday sales were 21% lower than last year's holiday sales.  Richemont -- which includes Cartier watches, Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry, and Montblanc pens -- said its sales were down 12% during the fiscal quarter that included Christmas 2008.

The other possible theory is simply bad marketing. Where are the ads targeting younger buyers? Have they made any attempt to exploit the recent nostalgia craze?

And your numbers are far too recent to indicate a long term decline.

2008, if you haven't noticed, was the beginning of a recession.
