  •  What's the point of relocating it? (8+ / 0-)

Isn't the idea of Waterford crystal is that it is all hand blown and hand etched by extremely skilled artisans in Ireland?  Otherwise, one can buy cheaper crystal if just crystal is all you want.

I was lucky enough to spend some time in Waterford and the tour of the Waterford plant is great.  There are no seconds - they destroy flawed pieces and the workers get paid by the piece.  I have a few pieces of Waterford given to me as gifts.  The best is I have two millenium champagne flutes (given to us by my husband's employer).  Gorgeous.

    •  That's the reason I buy it. If it isn't (7+ / 0-)

made in Ireland, it isn't Waterford.

I'm so sick of this BS.

I am one-half Irish and am very proud of the Waterford crystal (Lismore) that I was given at my wedding over 35 years ago.  Every time I handle one of those goblets, I think of my Irish grandparents.  I also own two of the huge Millenium goblets from 2000.  It has been a lifelong dream of mine to someday make it to Ireland and the Waterford Factory was near the top of my "Want to See" list.  If they move this factory to Asia, I will definitely never buy another piece.  It just sickens me to think they could do this to these workers, who I view as artisans.   The beauty of the glassware is worth every cent it costs.  Damn, this just makes me sick.

I have a collection of Waterford Crystal Christmas ornaments that I've been bulding as a legacy to hand down to my son.

They are betting that the typical buyer of Waterford Crystal will not know where the crystal is actually made and will still pay the same price believing they are getting something of great value, made by highly skilled well compensated artisans. As long as it continues to hold its resale price, the typical buyer probably won't care. I use to buy Coach bags which lasted forever, and felt OK about the high price tag because they were made in a factory in Brooklyn, NY. Coach very quietly relocated their factorys to China, with most of their customers none the wiser and probably if they know they don't care because they are buying a status symbol not a quality product made by fairly compensated Americans. I haven't bought a Coach bag since I spotted the first made in China labels. It has worked out very well for Coach as their bags are more then now twice the price as when I stopped buying them while their manufacturing costs have been greatly lowered. I expect it will work out just fine for Waterford too.
