I've been reading a lot lately about how much fuel it takes to get food to the supermarket, how much of a carbon footprint it makes, the impact of pesticides on the quality of our soil... which was why I joined Weavers Way, to buy local, buy organic, and tosupport these small farms instead of industrial farms.

After the new member orientation meeting, I felt like I'd taken a college course in Making the World a Better Place, but I sure as hell knew a lot more about my food supply, too. I had the culinary degree, now I'm discovering food as a natural resource, not just as an art.

Our local co-op is walking distance from home and we've been going for 8 years.  In that time it has grown and grown.  At first it was the typical "scary" co-op with supplements, bulk food etc; but it is now for all appearances a small grocery store.  They have a cafe that serves great meals and has become somewhat of a destination.

The change in clientelle has been amazing.  At first it was your typical granola crowd but now it runs the gamut.  High school kids skip the convenience stores to get snack, nascar moms and dads, the elderly and everyone in between. I actually saw a McCain bumper sticker in the parking lot once.  It is completely mainstream now.  It is great to see more people paying attention to the food they eat and supporting locally produced food.
