  •  Trails, right? (4+ / 0-)

Oftentimes, trails are simply bike "roads" separate from car "roads". Such as the many along decommissioned railways. They are even more efficient than bike lanes as more people use them, because there is no fear of getting hit by a Hummer.

certain bike-friendly locales. Most of the scary car/truck vs bike close-calls I've had over the last decade have occurred as I rode in a bike lane.
Yet mostly that painted white stripe is the best we can expect here in the US.
      We can do better.

the respect for a person on a bike from a person in a couple ton car is sad to say the least.

        •  In the Tahoe area I have about 1 near-flattening (0+ / 0-)

each summer. In the winter I ride down in Reno, usually on the weekends. About every third Saturday I get a BP spike from some errant truck. Like that black 2009 Hummer with no license plate that menaced me twice in one morning: Yeah, I'm calling you out punk!

bike paths are a foreign concept. Heck the roads don't even have shoulders that are not just gravel. I literally have to share the road with cars and trucks. When I am out on nobody ever slows down or even really gives me any "space." I ride a lot less than I used to.
