  •  Villaraigosa is running (4+ / 0-)

He's not announcing because he's got a re-election bid in LA next month.  But he's got 2.7 million in the bank for his re-election bid and only token opposition.  That money can get rolled over into a statewide race.

Newsome's got image and money problems.  I'd almost be surprised if he sticks around in the race to actually appear on the primary ballot.

It's going to be a three-way race between Brown, Villaraigosa and Garamendi.  Garamendi is the dark-horse who's not likely to compete with the other two on money, but could sneak in and win the nomination if Brown and Villaraigosa tear each other apart, much like how Grey Davis first got elected.

Weird as it's going to be for someone who remembers him from the 1970s, but Brown's going to be the more conservative Democratic candidate and Villaraigosa is going to be the "change" candidate on the left.
