You said Khatami's candidacy shows that the Leader wants to change course.  It does no such thing.  In that way the diary is misleading.

You conclude that that the Leader has changed his attitude because a moderate politician has declared his candidacy for the presidency, something that happens every four years.  In that way the diary is bizarre.

There's a huge difference between Khamanei accepting Khatami's candidacy and, if it happens, his victory, and endorsing it, which is what your diary says the Leader is doing.

I am pretty sure that if Khamanei did not want him to run, he would not be. It is not a bizarre suggetion, because in elections at the time of the Iraq invasion, the hardliners and the supreme council did just that. They disallowed "reform" candidates from running and undercut Khatami's last two years.

If you want to argue that is is all the same, that's fine, but it is not at all "bizarre" to suggest that the possibility of a third term for Khatami suggests a softening of the hard-line position that became a great deal stronger in Iran when Bush pronounced them part of the Axis of Evil, and the subsequent invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Go ahead a keep ignoring what is inconvenient for you.

You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife and you may ask yourself, "How did I get here?"
