  •  More like Germany 1920, not 1930 (2+ / 0-)

I am not a historical determinist, so this is analogy not prediction - but I think a closer analogy is to the immediate post-WW I Germany than to 1930 Germany.

The US is coming out of morally devastating and financially ruinous military engagements.  As with Germany in 1919, there was no significant military damage to Germany proper and Germans revelled in the legacy of a huge military victory (on the Eastern Front) coupled with a stalemate-turned-defeat on the Western Front; but there was a crippling financial liability, a large number of disillusioned veterans, a political system that had lost the public trust, and a depression that left no jobs for the returning veterans.

We tend to forget that Weimar held on for over a decade in the face of devastating odds.  The US is only at the beginning of that test.
