  •  Howard (none)
I was hoping a bush defeat would sour Howard's victory somewhat.

First Howard, now Bush.  Truth no longer matters.  Fear and jingoism are king.

Sounds a bit like Weimar Germany...

I know that a lot of Australians (myself included) who were basically expecting Howard to win, but also expected Kerry to win as a sort of consolation prize.  The fact that they're both back in beggars belief.

Howard lies to the Australian populace for three years and gets rewarded with an increased majority.  Bush is the most incompetent head of state since Henry VI and he gets rewarded with a decisive re-election and control of every branch of government the Americans seem to have.

That Hitler came to power under a popular mandate. Not to invoke Godwin's, but I think we need to remember that sometimes the popular vote can be very, VERY wrong.

..oops too late.  I'm going to do a diary about this topic. It's taboo but at this point what does it matter.  There are some striking parallels between the two.

    •  Howard and neocons (none)
As another Australian grieving for my own country, but who was fully expecting Kerry's landslide victory to isolate our prime miniature, I fear for Australia as well.  Like Bush/Rove, Howard has no ideology except rewarding his rich mates and getting re-elected.

Now that the neocons have cemented their power in the US, I imagine that getting a compliant Australia to follow their path could be a nice little experiment for them.  Watch for the rise of "Christian" values becoming more prominent in the Oz political landscape.
