but I was always troubled by the notion that Obama was acting the way he was because he was naive, or that he just wasn't tough enough. The man, as you noted, went from being a state senator to president in 4 years. You have to be tough and you can't be naive, if you're going to do that. Now, whether Obama's strategies and tactics always work is another story, but if they don't, it's not because he was naive going into it.

... and the problems with a number of his early appointments proves that.

But, in this case, I kept thinking he was letting Republicans bitch and moan and complain and shout "Tax cuts" over and over while he waited and met with them and offered compromises he knew they would take -- and still reject the bill.

The one thing he knew he had in his favor is that the public realizes we're in deep trouble, and only the government has enough cash and resources to get us headed out of this.

And he also knew that public also understands that tax cuts don't mean squat if you don't have a job. That's easy to outline in a single sentence.

SO he let them go on while many here and elsewhere screeched, "We're losing this battle to the Republicans!"

And Obama realizes that this bill -- as big as it is -- isn't the only action the government is going to have to take to get us out of this hole. There are many more bills to come.

      This is only a start.

He said so himself. It's one leg of a multi-legged stool.

The toughest leg is going to be health care.
