didn't a number of republican Governors come out in favor of the stimulus package as well as Democratic Governors?

And wouldn't opposing things that would bring jobs to the state be bad in terms of running for office on a state level?

Normally, I would agree, but I think there has been a big spotlight on what was pulled out and why, so that this may not sway voters.

Now....the strategy may still be on the Governorship level, but a good test case will be my state of NJ, where Corzine is not popular but Christie doesn't have much to run on (and he was endorsed by former Governor Kean, who was not a very fiscal conservative).

      As for this point:

wouldn't opposing things that would bring jobs to the state be bad in terms of running for office on a state level?

Remember, it's the Congressional Republicans who are opposing those things. And, the Republicans challenging Democratic incumbents in the states over the next several election cycles will blame those incumbents for the states' problems. The voters might, too.

but I think Obama's PR tour and his communications skills will help show that any lack of funding was pulled out in order to not have Congressional republicans sink this altogether.

Also, there may be additional funding for some of these items in future bills or appropriations.

But I agree with the basic premise that the Governorships are their best shot at trying to regain their footing.
