today, if we brought back the draft.

Say what you will, but the military will continue to be filled with minorities and the poor because it's a way up and out of poverty. They put their life on the line to protect us and our "best and brightest" are under represented, by a long shot.

I was a soldier because it was expected of me. If you were an able bodied man, you did your obligation, no questions asked. Freedom has a price.

to have a mandatory national service requirement, no exceptions beyond the obvious ones, with military service being one of the options meeting that.

I think that I have had enough of you telling me how things will be. Today I choose a new way to go ... and it goes through you!

      •  Both of you have the right idea. (0+ / 0-)

Maybe people would think about who they're picking to be commander in chief of the armed forces if it's their own family members being called to serve.

Besides, the military spends a truly obscene amount of money on recruiting in good times and bad (see "ultimate hard sell remark" upthread).  For example, why does the Army sponsor its own NASCAR racer?  If people knew how much it costs just to get one guy to sign on the dotted line before he spends even one day in boots, many would demand we rethink this all-volunteer force nonsense.

Half-baked ideas for sale - cheap!

      •  I absolutely agree with this (0+ / 0-)

and I am about to sign my name on the dotted line.  We should have a mandatory 4 years of national service and everyone (minus obvious exclusions) should be have to go through basic and get MOS qualified for some military job - basically a 1-2 year commitment.  The remaining time can be spent in some other national service position.  And after that 4 years everyone gets full public college tuition vouchers which can be redeemed at state institutions in full or for use at private schools with the remainder being made up by the family.
