  •  Why have pseudo-military bands teaching (5+ / 0-)

students to march? Some students enjoy it obviously -- sounds like she's in ROTC because she's planning on going into the service.

I agree -- this could have been handled as simply as telling the student to keep the rifle replica in the the trunk / out of sight.

It has it's foundations in military marching, but these days, it is far far more than that.  Though some of the Drum Core programs are sponsored by the military, if you go and watch some of their performances, they have become more like interpretive dance in parts than anything you'd expect to see in a militaristic organization (which they are not).

With this said, the discipline is somewhat rigorous.  And again, given the roots of marching music, part of a Drum Core competition is scored on the performance of the gun twirlers.   It's just part of the tradition of the thing.

it's an SUV. Story doesn't say what year the student's vehicle is. But I agree with you -- this could have been handled far more constructively.

Like telling whoever came and tattled to grow up.

      •  I (confusingly) tried to give generic advice (0+ / 0-)

hoping the "/out of sight" would cover it.

But yes, this whole thing was a tempest in a teapot and a waste of energy and effort all around.  I see the student has been allowed back to school as of next week.  Wonder what lessons she and her classmates have taken away from all this?

bullying is bad, even when the bullies are school administrators.

out of sight? they'd get her for "concealed carry" then, no doubt.

Honestly, this 'zero tolerance' thing is just insupportable.
