I'm an unschooling parent myself. I have learned a lot about the unexamined biases I internalized by watching my kids grow up in such a different way. Over and over again I have watched them grow into things in their own time. My 10 year old boy is slowly making friends with reading. He knows how to do it, but he isn't confident about it yet. But he has come to it on his own, introducing the concepts to us as his brain is ready to start dealing with them. There have been many times I wanted to panic about it except that there were experienced parents telling me stories of their own kids and the value of allowing them to go at their own speed.

as I said in my post it wasn't pretty but it seems to have worked out.  Eric survived his youth and I think he will be okay as an adult.
