What school should be teaching, or assisting in, is the development of the skills required to gain knowledge when it's needed, to synthesize and understand it.  And it should be taught in a way that school becomes an environment where students can exercise their own agency, explore their boundaries, and figure out how to keep both feet on the ground.

My daughter loves math. She is in second grade and is in the process of discovering the multiplication table. Working it all out for herself in a very concrete way. I'm sure she will have memorized it by the time she is done but she will remember it as discovery, not oppressive drilling.
