I have flown a flag on my balcony for a couple of years, precisely because I am not willing to give in to the notion that love of country is exclusive to the right.  I had been thinking in terms of "my country, right or wrong does not mean my country can't be wrong," but someone around here uses a far more eloquent quote, the origin of which I cannot remember:

"My country, right or wrong.  When right, to be kept right, and when wrong, to be made right"

This nation's symbols, and its ideals, do not  belong to any party.  That flag symbolizes a nation which has never fully realized its ideals, but has struggled towards them for hundreds of years.  We may now be entering a time where that struggle has become more difficult, progress will be slow, and we may indeed stagger back a step or two under the weight of fear, but we will continue forward.  America the nation will struggle closer to America the ideal.

My flag came down election night in a fit of anger; first it sat in a pile on my table, but later I folded it neatly.  It had been up a while, and while folding it I noticed places where it needed to be cleaned or mended.  My anger will subside, and the flag will return to its place once cleaned.  My anger forced me to see what needed to be done for that flag, and this election has increased my conviction to do what must be done for America, the nation and the ideal.
