the extraordinary act of kindness and sportsmanship did cost the softball team a shot at the playoffs (emph added):

Then, members of the Central Washington University softball team stunned spectators by carrying Tucholsky around the bases Saturday so the three-run homer would count — an act that contributed to their own elimination from the playoffs.

OTOH, the UConn "stunt" was for the UConn scoring record, a "vanity" play if ever there was one.

Once a homerun clears the outfield wall most people see the work of hitting the homerun as complete. Thus, not counting the homerun because the player was injured trotting around the bases would probably feel to many like having the homerun stripped away on a technicality. The opposing players didn't know that it was her first homerun or would be her last chance ever to hit one:

“We didn’t know that she was a senior or that this was her first home run,” Wallace said Wednesday. “That makes the story more touching than it was. We just wanted to help her.”

In the case of the basketball team allowing the player to score the points to win the record, a special situation is created simply to allow the person 2 more points simply because it would give them the record.
