  •  please see a genetic counselor (7+ / 0-)

One of the types of ovarian cancer has a familial pattern of lung, colon and ovarian. I think it is HNPCC or Lynch syndrome.  Please find out if you carry a genetic mutation for cancer, as there are many screening tools that could find your cancer early.

and then you'll have to pay out of pocket.

GINA laws are full of loopholes and have very little enforcement protection if a health insurance company or employer discriminates against you because of genetic predisposition to cancer.  Enforcement provisions are so weak you would probably have a difficult time finding a lawyer to take the case if you do face discrimination.

      •  Not necessary to be a Jane Doe for counseling. (1+ / 0-)

My visit to the genetic counselor was paid for through my insurance and the institution had numerouis controls to insure that the results of the counseling were private.

I was then tested anonymously for BRCA gene mutations in a clinical trial and paid nothing for the test.

If you are worried about seeing the genetic counselor, the out of pocket cost should be only what a regular docs office costs.

You can figure out after that how to get the actual testing.
