  •  Read a years-old article, same phenom textiles (6+ / 0-)

If the brain were in better shape I'd see if I could recall, was it in a link to an older story from the New Yorker?

In any case, you are right, these multi-nationals move from the North to the south [if they even stay in the US; this is what happened with textiles] then move from a US locale to Mexico and from there to asia.

And your point about cleanliness is well-taken.

I believe the story I'd read was in regards to the early-century history of the kinds of Southern textile mills that Sen Edwards' father worked in, before they moved out of the USA. Those Carolina mills and jobs had in fact been built at the expense of northerner's jobs, and the story was in regards to the regional conflict here in the US between wages and benefits, apropos of the recently burgeoning auto factory conflict between US regions.

We cannot possibly compete with this downward race to the bottom of wages and health care pitting region against region, and then pitting the US vs those whose wages could not sustain life in the US.

We will restore science to its rightful place....We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil .... All this we can do. And all this we will do.
