    As the daughter of a union man, I can attest to the changes in my father's life, when he became a union man.

      ... that some of the most important union advances were in the depths of the depression.  Back when the CIO was an upstart, nipping at the heels of the not-so-progressive AFL.  The merger didn't come till 1955.

      The trick was that things were so bad then, people were desperate, and organized.  The powers that be were afraid of where the organized uprisings might lead, and made a lot of concessions.  Not much of it (unemployment, social security, 8 hour day, ending child labor, safety requirements) came without serious public clamor.

      That's how I see it, and I hope some of it came across in the video.
