  •  They're behaving as an opposition party should. (1+ / 0-)

Let's admit it:  they are behaving like we wanted our guys to behave under Bush--defiant and united in opposition.

The correct response is not to reach out to them, but to ignore and run over them.

      defiant and united in opposition

The Republicans don't seem united to me. If they were united, they could filibuster everything in the Senate, yet almost every day there is a major piece of legislation signed (stimulus) or someone else in Obama's cabinet is confirmed, someone solidly progressive.

The circular Republican firing squad has already begun, as some of them threaten to primary out those Republicans who voted for the stimulus.

    •  Not When There's A National Emergency. In (5+ / 0-)

the aftermath of 9-11 we wanted our democratic reps to help, not hurt the national defense and recovery efforts.

We held our noses or, hoping against hope for the best, we squelched our antipathy to the neocon BushCo pResidency.  Our democratic reps supported BushCo but we were all betrayed by their commitment to lies and lying.

We face another national emergency and the Thugs will not set aside their partisan ideology to support our popular president.  They are disgraceful.

No, if we just ignore them we'll make the same mistake they did, and that got them out of power. We shouldn't ignore them. We should shove their witless kneejerk opposition in the faces of their voters. Consistent application of the truth will scour their ranks more surely than their consistent lying about Democrats worked for them.

Eventually (the sooner the better), they'll be cleansed into a real alternative party to Democrats, with their own viable solutions. There's more than one way to do it, and Democrats will quickly become as dangerous as were Republicans with a party monopoly. But progress requires engagement to go fast enough to matter. Grinding them down is better than letting them fester.
