    by giving everyone the extra amount they originally mistakenly gave only a few people.

    I wish banks followed that rule too - everyone should get the extra $1 million or so which was mistakenly deposited in a person's account. After all - it's only fair we should all get some of the stolen loot!!!

      Personally I'd err on the side of treating laid off employees equally, especially when it can be done relatively easily and at a reasonable cost.  

      If M$ would rather it be like a "bank error in your favor" Monopoly card, that's obviously their choice.

      But yes, if my credit union mistakenly deposits $100 in 20 people's accounts, they either better take it back or deposit the same amount in all our accounts.
