      We have a road closure that causes people near me to detour an entire mile. A mile!  OMG!  People have not only been slinking past the barrels blocking the road, they are also risking a very unsafe intersection (which they are NOT supposed to be using).

      Some people speed because they like to, because they can.  My sister learned to drive from her SO.  His philosophy was that if he wasn't passing others, he was going too slow.  Oh noes!  Someone is passing me!  I. must. go. faster.

      It's complicated but it basically boils down to the fact that people value going fast more than they value saving gas.  They may grumble when they buy fuel, but they forget the minute they get behind the wheel again.

        I know how long each "leg" of my commute takes, since I have driven it for a couple of years. I know the total time.

        I don't think I've yet had a perfect storm day where I make all the lights and don't get stuck behind some moron going 40 in the left lane.

        You can be road crazy even within the speed limit if you try to beat yourself.

        Yes. Conservation has no emotional punch. I guess we will have to wait for anoxia.
