in peace, safety or "wholeness" before. Have you ever seen the pictures of the amputated hands and feet from the Hadd punishments in the soccer stadium?

The Taliban are as bad as they come.

for sure, but it is possible, but unknown right now, that there are moderate Taliban that can't act moderate for fear of their and their families lives.

Getting Dems together and keeping them that way is like trying to herd cats, hopped up on crank, through LA, during an earthquake, in the rain. -6.25, -6.10

      •  moderate Afghanis... of course! (0+ / 0-)

moderate people who were or are affiliated with the Taliban? yes.

But the organization itself is rigidly extremist... so much so that it can't change.

        •  I don't believe that. (0+ / 0-)

It is not true historically or as human behavior. Many insurgents go on to work with governments. Those that will not bend become the enemies of all of the people, this is the basic way you take an insurgency apart, by co-opting the middle levels into legitimate government.

I remember their apologists in the Islamic community here... they were extreme to the point of fanaticism.

Yes, you coopt the middle ground, and that is doable in Afghanistan... but not under that name. Do you know what Taliban means? or how they got their name? The mythology surrounding this group runs deep, and reinforces the fanaticism. That's one tiger that will never change it's stripes.

A moderate Islamic government is possible... a moderate Taliban? ..never!
