That is not true at all.  Taliban are very inwardly focused Pashtun tribalists.  Al Qaeda are externally focused angry Arab Islamists, who have made common cause with angry and alienated Islamists everywhere they can.  To read the Taliban and Al Qaeda as the same completely misunderstands the situation.

Part of the reason for my question to Dog is that one of the reasons Al Qaeda was so strong in Taliban-Afghanistan is that they were critical.  THe Al Qaeda Brigade won several key battles against the Northern Alliance, including a defense of Kabul.  The Taliban were beholden to them on some level.  Without that debt, the Taliban may well be willing to abandon the Arab Al Qaeda to its fate.

a shared interpretation of Islam binds these folks... they can't abandon each other... they are mutually dependent. The Wahhabis have been cultivating the Taliban longer than we have.

Do you remember the nineties? The international calls for learning "Islam" and Jihad in Afghanistan? The slogans like "100% pure Islam".

The unbreakable ties between the Taliban and "al Qaeda" amount to the Wahhabi ideology and Saudi money. Talibani sheikhs are collecting cash for weapons in the Gulf as we speak.

I am intimately familiar with the situation... and am not "misreading" it.

      •  Wow! When? (0+ / 0-)

        Are you from Afghanistan?

Getting Dems together and keeping them that way is like trying to herd cats, hopped up on crank, through LA, during an earthquake, in the rain. -6.25, -6.10

But I've lived in the Gulf, Qatar specifically.

They have a following there, and everywhere else in the Gulf. They raise money, and teach their "version" of Islam. Their following is not big, but it provides for them. They've been active there for years.

the guy was telling me about the war with the Soviet Union. He said that the when they recovered the bodies of the dead mujahideen, that their bodies smelled of roses, because they had become shahid (martyrs).

These guys are foul... and nuts.
