We cannot 'buy' Afghanistan, whatever we have done to plunder that land.  As to the evil of the Taliban, it is more or less completely 'our creature,' so perhaps you might say that since we set them up in power in order to 'stabilize' the nightmare remaining after Osama Bin Laden and our other 'friends' had trashed the Russians, then we ought to do something to eliminate their toxic influence.

In a game of 'Risk,' or a multi-player empire game, such a perspective would have a lot of resonance.  Since, however, at the level of operations that stem from the executive branch of the United States, empire is the likely goal of our policy, such thinking seems inappropriate unless one subscribes to the notion that imperial or other manifest destiny guides us in our quest.  I don't buy such ideas.

We need to support democracy, even if that means making reparations for our attacks on it over the years, in this part of the world including not only our fiscal and logistical support of Bin Laden and his ilk but also our toppling of Muhammad Mosadeq from the Presidency of Iran, replacing him with one of history's most storied butchers, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi.

I bow to those who seek the truth; I flee from those who have 'found' it.
