  •  Isn't Rainier a little bit alarming on occasion? (5+ / 0-)

    Every few years I read a piece of news (buried down here) about Rainier grumbling and muttering, and pointing out the obvious: if it wakes all the way up, it takes out a great American city.

      none of them are dormant as far as i know...

      Shasta, sisters (not sure what each one is called) mount bachelor, jefferson, adams, ranier hood, st helens and many more. the only one that i know is dormant is the one with Crater Lake, which is a must visit national helens is a wonderful trip as well, can do a day trip in a car, or do some serious hiking

    •  A big danger from Mt Rainier (4+ / 0-)

      is if heat from an eruption melts snow and ice to combine with ash and generate lahars, mudflows that could bury entire towns.  Some communities around Rainier actually have warning sirens now.  Geologic mapping has shown that much of the development in the area is upon old lahars.  They can travel for miles and miles down valleys.
