  •  Habits that divide us (4.00)
This is a useful discussion.  I was interested to note in your figures that 12.6% are religious right and 12.6% religious left.

How do we unlearn the habit of painting people with labels that divide rather than unite?  I am a liberal ecumenical Christian.  I have met lots of people who make assumptions about what I believe based on that label.  Let's recognize the rich diversity that exists among us all, religious, and non-religious alike, and stop typecasting one another.  All of us have a blame game habit that makes it difficult to find a shared pool of common meaning, but your chart certainly indicates that it is possible to construct a moderate to progressive coalition around perhaps some newly articulated values.  For example, when Jesse Ventura was elected here in Minnesota he had a message about personal responsibility that resonated with a lot of people.  I think people who are in the moderate to right area of the spectrum don't like the idea of government bailing out people who make irresponsible decisions.   George Lakoff's assessment of the "stern father" model versus the "nurturant father" model is very instructive here. see George Lakoff video

I like the social justice idea myself, and believe the democrats could have done a much better job of making the case for that.  I disagree with your assessment of the usefulness of "reframing the issues."  For the past 30-odd years the pro-life movement has placed the welfare of the unborn baby at the center of their argument.  Where is the baby's mother in the billboard pictures?  We've allowed a vocal minority to frame the issue in absolutist, lopsided ways.

    •  Hey, I missed the balance! (none)
Darn it, I noticed that when I first read the article, then zoned it out.  So talk about base wars:  the Religious Right isn't really bigger than the Religious Left, unless you count in the culture warriors...
