    My parents liked it because they were old enough to "get" some of the jokes us kids didn't, particularly the political ones.

      all the time, and that had a lot of political and adult humor.  Along with a lot of dumb stuff.

      It's all part of extending into television elements of a vaudeville tradition that nowadays is pretty much gone from popular comedy.  It seems to me.
