  •  Yeah, the crisis is not in Social Security (8+ / 0-)

The crisis is that Social Security will stop being a cash cow for the treasury; and that between paying interest on the bonds SS holds and SS redeeming them starting in 2027 or so, as it was always supposed to do, general revenues will take a giant hit.

I wish Obama would stop peddling the dishonest Washington meme on SS - he's just playing into the GenX and late-boomer notion that SS is no good because it's not going to be around for them.

the ONLY thing, that had me worried about him - why my "transition" was from Edwards to Hillary to Obama.  He keeps using the R meme of SS being trouble.  It isn't and won't be - as long as the gov't is in good enough shape to not default on the bonds.  But as Molly Ivins used to remind folks, if the gov't is in such bad shape as to default on bonds, we've got a whole lot more to worry about than retirement.

He needs to recast it in a "fix the long-term deficits" frame, which means higher income taxes on the wealthy, not removing the FICA cap, even if we're talking about the same amount of increased taxation on a given individual.

        •  Agreed. SS as it stands is a (1+ / 0-)

life annuity with disability and dependent benefits.  It's been paid into by the employee.  FDR (unfortunately incorrectly) stated that the fact that the employee pays into it would forever prevent anyone from calling it an entitlement program.  sigh.  But it's always taken in more than it's spent.

    •  "Enemy of the essential" quote: (0+ / 0-)

"This sentiment--""We can no longer let the perfect be the enemy of the essential""--seems to be shaping up as the signature motto of the first Obama administration."
How about it's the signature motto of the first 2 MONTHS of the Obama administration!
