  •  Yes, there is life in Tennessee (8+ / 0-)

It's called Memphis. We sent a liberal progressive to Congress to replace Harold Ford Jr., we've got more Democrats here than in any other part of the South, we went 80% for Obama, and we just incorporated Instant Runoff Voting into our City Charter.

I don't what what the hell John DeBerry is doing anywhere near this bill. He is a great Rep, and usually more progressive than his colleagues. I am still at a loss to explain his connection to this craziness.

(-5.88, -6.46) Democracy is what happens between elections.

    •  As a native but now expat-Memphian... (6+ / 0-)

I can attest to that.  I still have family back in the River City and they're Democrats all.  It's a place rather unlike the rest of Tennessee, thank goodness.

And I do want to thank you all for sending, not just a good progressive, but one of the most ethical and public-service minded Congresspersons in the entire country to fill the TN-09 seat in Ford's place: Congressman Steve Cohen.  He was my mother's state rep. earlier in his career and was famous for actually living on his state reps salary only (unlike all the rest of his colleagues.)  His take on it was that the people had hired him to do their business, so he should give them his full attention and not conduct his own business on the side.
