Why don't we treat teachers like doctors? It should be very hard to become a teacher. Since it hasn't been, our best teachers are overshadowed by waves of mediocrity and yes, teacher unions do in fact protect a lot of people who have no business at all being in the classroom (but who do pay dues.) I believe that 99.9 percent of teachers want their kids to succeed. I think only about 20 percent actually know how to make that a reality, especially in a school where most kids are poor and where the parents aren't engaged. And yet, getting kids to succeed in underfunded, underperforming schools happens every day -- just not enough, and not at a scale that will actually turn the tide on long-term poverty -- which is where a lot of kids who aren't reading at grade level have come from and are heading to.  What merit pay won't do retirement will, eventually, and we should set the stage now for attracting the smart, the tough and the savvy to the profession, not just the caring.

Because we don't want to pay them like doctors and we don't want them to have working conditions like doctors.
