We have had other presidents with serious attempts on their lives - Ford, Reagan,Truman and FDR (as president-elect, an attempt that killed Tony Cermak, mayor of Chicago).

    You forgot Teddy Roosevelt.

And I think Marvin Gaye was killed by a relative (his father?) -- one or both ofthe actors involved being whacked on drugs. Not a particularly good example.

We're talking about violent strangers, not about "domestic violence" in the usual meaning of the phrase.

and in no way did I state that I was limiting the issue of violence to strangers -  in Gaye's case I included him because his fame as a performer further inflamed his father's anger against him, although you are correct that in this case the proximate cause was much more within the family.  Still, the idea that well-known celebrities are subject to violence was the the theme I was addressing.

I threw this think together fairly quickly.  Perhaps had I had more time to review and revise I would have replaced him with actress Theresa Saldana who was slashed by a stalker and almost died.

So I accept one of your two nits -  that on Gaye - although at this point I am not going to go back and correct, because I do not think it is really essential. Not including TR was a deliberate choice because I was not quite sure in what category I should put him, and because I made clear, at least I thought I did, that I was not attempting to be exhaustive.

do we still have a Republic and a Constitution if our elected officials will not stand up for them on our behalf?
