    •  I don't know. (4+ / 0-)

When the extent of the economic collapse first started to be evident, she was going on and on and on about how her Dad told her to stock up on food supplies and all this other survivalist stuff.  Didn't sound very centerist at all to me.

is that "regular folk centrists" are aging out of the political spectrum as tech and media-savvy progressives are growing up.

There's an entire generation of voters who have no memory of Ronald Reagan, or Jimmy Carter, so all the talk about how awful one was or how much the other was like a Texas Jesus is lost on them. And if not lost on them, at least it doesn't carry the same weight as it does with their parents whose opinions formed while living through it.

It's a whole generation of kids raised on "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle," "it's not ok to treat all people of the same race as though they were the same," and who know first hand that D.A.R.E. is an abysmal failure, and who have no historic or nostalgic ties to any particular manufacturing industry.

But, unlike Norah O'Donell, when Brewer has a chance to ask the real question, the one that makes the politician uncomfortable because it demands an honest answer, she passes when it's a republican. She may not harbor any special loyalty to them, but she doesn't have the lefty edge that sees those openings and strikes when they are presented.

A lot of young folks may not remember Reagan or Carter, but if they have parents wingnutty enough to tell them how Reagan was a golden god or Carter was the worst president EVAR, they don't have the context to realize their parents are full of it. I know way too many kids who just blindly accept whatever political views their family goes with.

Me, I was wee in the 80s so my main early memories of presidents are being terrified when Bush I started the gulf war, and Clinton being the nice man with the saxophone on that show where everybody said woof woof a lot. I like to think I grew up a liberal for better reasons than that, but....
