    If the virus authors were up to something good, they could achieve better results with a distributed computing project a la SETI@home. There are many such projects, and many of them are pretty successful. Even a well constructed botnet like Conficker has a life span of only a few years; but these projects could last much longer. The downside is that you can't use the host computers to do things their owners would object to.

    Given that botnets are a big industry now I would be surprised if Conficker, sophisticated as it is, was unconnected with money, although the April 1st date does seem to indicate a prank.

    Or maybe you meaning something good along the lines of creating a huge headache and embarrassment for Microsoft? I'm all for that, though I feel sorry for the end users.
