  •  Genetically engineered goats are cloned..... (2+ / 0-)

and their milk is harvested and recombinant proteins used in theraptics are purified from the milk.  Naturally these goats are patented and their milk isn't made into tasty cheese.

Elite dairy herds have been cloning cows by in vitro fertilization and then separating twins (as many as 64 twins from a single fertilized embryo.  They freeze back the twins and grow one up, check if she is an elite milker, then sell the remaining embryos to farmers wishing to genetically improve their herd.  It is entirely feasible to have a herd of 20 identical twin cows.  No recombinant DNA needed.  Just manually cloned cows who naturally make high levels of the dreaded bovine growth hormone and therefore make more milk.  No injection needed.  But these cows can also be kept in barns and milked 3X a day which does increase their risk of some udder irritation.  Naturally.

Very few dairy bulls have been kept since the 1970s-extensive insemination of elite dairy bulls to increase milk production.  Bulls that have been dead for years are still being daddies.  And preimplantation screening of the embryos results in more desired cows born rather than young males who would become veal.  So is that good or bad?

In fact, all the technology pioneered in Artificial insemination and embryo transfer has been around in dairy herds for 1-2 decades before arriving in humans.

Folks at Daily Kos want clean pet cows from boutique dairies to produce their wholesome natural milk and want to eliminate all the technology they fear and want to have labeled so they can avoid it.  But they rarely onsider how agriculture and dairy improvements using technology feed the world's increasing populations and keep food inexpensive.

Not meant to specifically rant on for DemoraticLuntz, just an insomiac scientist frustrated at the fear factor.
