You give a clown like that tenure, you are stuck with him.

    •  Reminds me of that book, (2+ / 0-)

by a guy who has more points in the union than me. The guy is totally incompetent and stands in the middle of the class and talks with his eyes shut for 3 hours.

Doesn't matter if he stood there and farted for three hours.  He's got more points than me.

      •  How do you (0+ / 0-)

think he got tenure?  It's not at all like regular seniority.

Isn't it a very difficult hurdle?  Didn't his potential peers [tenured professors] okay his tenure?

        •  By pretending to be an American Indian that's how (1+ / 0-)

That's the little secret no one wants to talk about. Churchill is no more Indian than is Queen Elizabeth, but he put on a good enough show. Why do you think he crusades against the law that prohibits fake Indians like him from marketing handicrafts as Indian work?

As an Anglo, Churchill—no earned doctorate, terminal Masters degree from an ed school—would probably be rejected for a graduate student teaching assistantship. For an Indian, the university overlooked a million warning signs and got a juvenile radical crank.

in Churchill's case, the normal requirements for tenure were waived. (I taught for a year in a non-tenure track position at CU Boulder, and had to attend an all-day new faculty orientation that was mostly about tenure requirements. For any CU Boulder professor not named Ward Churchill, it's pretty demanding, requiring publishing high quality scholarship in peer reviewed outlets.)

Churchill lacked a PhD, normally a minimal qualification for a tenured appointed at a research university of the caliber of CU Boulder. And he was fast-tracked for tenure, which usually requires six years as an assistant professor. His work was largely non-scholarly advocacy stuff. Basically, the university made an exception in both hiring and tenuring him, waiving the usual standards because they wanted a high profile native American activist on the faculty.

      yet it's a hard-fought, hard-won
      advance for freedom of thought
      in the 20th century.

Would you turn back the clock
of human progress now in the 21st century?

There was LESS freedom of thought and action
      in the 20th century
      than in the 19th.

      And now?

A revolutionary has to know how to swim upstream.
      Freedom of thought will always
      produce cross-currents.

      In the cauldron of truth,
      the truth will come out.

      Let the frauds be exposed.
      The truth will out.

Try them in the churches and the schools.

A good school doesn't need the intervention
of the political power structure of the day
      to reveal the truth.
