There have been many documented cases of sub standard construction of major buildings throughout the United States.  Someone once said that the most important local official is the head of the building inspection dept. because he or his inspectors can be easily compromised either intentionally (bribes) or unintentionally (too heavy work loads to allow for thorough inspections).

The fact that the World Trade Center building collapsed after being struck by the terrorists is a separate issue from the conspiracy of terrorism.  Whether the collapse was due to poor design or malfeasance (or misfeasance) on the part of the contractor and/or the building inspector does not mean that they were a part of an organized terrorist conspiracy.  Nor does it mean that just because the owner of the buildings operates as an autonomous authority, that the owner was necessarily involved in a conspiracy to have substandard construction of the buildings.

The bottom line is that the burden rides upon three entities: the architect to properly design the structures, the contractor to build according to the approved design and materials, and for the building inspection department to ensure that both the design and construction is according the building code.  While the owner may have influence over the architect and the contractor, it is up to the building inspector (not the owner) to ensure that all requirements are met.

      Multiple conspiracies.

Lets be clear here everyone in this debate subscribes to at least one Conspiracy Theory.

The official one that the terrorist attacks that percipiated the collapse of the world trade center as well as the impact on the pentagon as well as the flight that crashed in Pensylvania were carried out by members of the terrorist organizations refered to as Al Qeda. That was a conspiracy a number of actors "conspiring" in secret to commit a crime.

Then there is the matter of explaining the glaring failures in our security aparatus particularly in my mind the rather suspicious actions of the Bush administration leading up to the attacks. If mistakes were made someone should have been canned. No one was canned ergo the assertion by the adminstraion is that no one made any mistakes how do they justify that assertion in the face of the biggest intelligence failure in the countries history.

Finally why the sloppy investigation after the fact? I mean people talk about the 9/11 commision but the Bush administration resisted the idea from the very start and even when it finally acquieced to public pressure it's scope and authority for inquiry was extremely limited. The Co-chairs of the commission ended up writing a book about the commission was "set up to fail".

Gee the guys who held the hearings and wrote the report didn't find it to be a sufficient investigation yet the rest of us should?

I'll say again I don't know what was being covered up, Incompetence, corrruption or intent but there was most fucking certainly a cover-up. And people generally tend to cover-up something that doesn't exist.

Calling this the "official conspiracy theory" is a bit like calling the theory of evolution "the official creation story."

I feel that this terminology is mostly used to disparage or diminish what we have established by evidence and eyewitness testimony, and suggest some false equivalency to other conspiracy theories.

I must admit, part of the reason I think this is that I argue with a lot of conspiracy theorists, and they tend to be the only people who ever use that phrase (just as creationists are really the only people to call evolution "just a theory.")
