  •  I take exception to "historically Normal Levels" (0+ / 0-)

"Historically non adjusted" perhaps but nothing was normal about a joint exemption that had a real chance of affecting the middleclass when real estate values were what they were when this law was enacted. I am hardly in favor of eliminating the estate tax but a realistic ( which is what 1.2 million was back when 1.2 million meant something) joint exemption of say, 2.5 million with some indexing, would not be a bad idea and would then return things to something resembling "normal". We should also be raising the gift tax exemption so that the upper middle class can use it to plan for any spillover of the maratial exemption. With regard to the Waltons and other super rich whose wealth has been taxed only at capital gains rates for the most part the estate tax is a just idea for our society on a number of levels.
