  •  Republicans should disapprove of Obama. (8+ / 0-)

The Broders and the libertarians like to say that party politics are just tribalism, unmoored from genuine principle, but that's just so much self-flattery from people whose self-image relies upon feeling superior to those silly partisans.

The fact is, Democrats and Republicans believe in different things.  Yes, there are broad areas of overlap, but those areas aren't where our politics happen.  There are important fields of thought and of governance where our values and beliefs differ, and even conflict.

Torture.  Rule of law.  War.  Positive vs. negative rights.  These things may not be Marxism vs. Divine Right of Kings, but they're not chicken feed, either.

Barack Obama is governing in a manner that is consistent with the principles that animate the Democratic Party - which means by definition, he is doing things that violate important, deep-seated values that Republicans genuinely and passionately care about.  If Republicans didn't disapprove of how he was doing his job, it would mean that he wasn't advancing the set of principles that he ran on, and promised to advance through his office.
