    My Dad, now deceased almost 19 years, considered himself a conservative and I have to admit that in many ways he was a wingnut, subscribing to doomsday theories, believing a lot of what today's nutters are preaching. However, he was also a smart man and, had he lived, I am certain the Bush misadministration would have been more troubling to him than the Obama administration.

    True conservatives want to conserve the core values on which the nation was founded, key among them is religious freedom, which means freedom from religion as much as freedom to practice the religion of one's choosing. When the "conservative" movement hooked up with the "religious right" it lost its sense of direction and completely changed course.
