  •  I have quite a large... (6+ / 0-)

...organic garden (working seedlings now, potatoes up, peas expected soon), about half an acre. But grow medicinals in the forest, which is about 12.5 of my 14 acres. Ginseng, black cohosh, goldenseal and more obscure medicinals that normally grow wild here have been managed. And my wild rose hip crop is abundant! Kudzu (excellent greens and flower jelly), poke, groundnuts, day lilies, baskets of violets and plenty of sassafras for smoking trout...

Thanks, bythesea. Now if I could just manage to create a swamp in the bottomland to grow cattails and bamboo... §;o)

Sounds like somewhere in the South most likely.  I'd so the same if I had 14 acres, but have been a renter for quite some time.  Sigh.

...container gardening! My Mom used to grow the best tomatoes on her apartment patio in slit-open bags of soil. Now they have tomato planters that hang upside down (no staking!). You can grow fresh young salad in a 3" deep flat (and spinach), kale and/or collards in a pot (harvest outside leaves, they'll keep producing), potatoes in a barrel of straw. Having rented for most of our lives, how do you think I got the practice for a quarter acre of real dirt!!!?? §;o)

You could probably grow the bamboo anyway.  I've seen swathes of it on land that was low and fairly moist but not even close to being swamp.

emerging here this weekend - just inch and a half high so far.

One source says the seeds may take two or more years to germinate; this one came from a root cutting. Slow going! But I wanted some nearby; its a superb medicinal.

Any suggestions for a good seed or shoot source of Panax ginseng and Hydrastis canadensis?
