  •  No it's not "reparations" (0+ / 0-)

They have no right to do that. I can't believe that you're defending piracy.

    •  Why not? (2+ / 0-)

Their food is being stolen, their land and water are being poisoned. The world knows and has turned a blind eye. Why should these people passivly die because someone who isn't starving doesn't feel that people have the right to defend their own homes and resourses?

Did you hate Robin Hood too?

It's really easy to get moralistic when you aren't the one being slowly murdered, but if Canada were dumping toxic waste off our shores and killing our citizens you would expect the military to respond. The Somalis don't have that option.

Piracy isn't the answer. And I can't believe that you're defending the pirates.

      •  If the piracy was directed solely at vessels (1+ / 0-)

supported by multinationals with whom the Somalis have attempted negotiations related to dumping or fishing, then there may be a sociopolitical rationale here.

But, these hijackings and kidnappings do not appear to emanate uniquely from that based assumption, nor are the vessels/people all associated with commercial enterprises.  They are taking oil, various goods, pleasure craft and the like.

There are questions of how much of these spoils are going to impoverished people vs. some warlords who may be involved with coordination and backing of these attacks.

I see more than a simply cause-and-effect reactionary stance happening.  Somalia is a country in turmoil and filled with lawless areas - the piracy we've been seeing emanate from that region over the past seven or so years has many causes and motivations.

Fine diary to keep minds open and informed, but far from a unique view on the pirate's motivations, I'm afraid.

Wikipedia actually has decent references to offer.
