    it is valuable to have someone who can view things without the muddying lens of politics.  he is an economist with an extremely agile and educated mind.  it's not his job to get the work done in washington, it's his job to call it like he sees it.

      That's precisely, precisely the problem with the whole economic view: there's no such thing as a world without the muddying lens of politics. It doesn't exist. Economics in a world without politics is useful to set goals, but nothing more. Economists never seem to acknowledge this and then get irrationally angry and frustrated at people who do understand this.

      Basically it's a good idea to read economists like Krugman for ideas of what to do, but once one gets those ideas it's probably best to ignore them thenceforth. Certainly don't read their political strategy opinions unless you want to remain in the minority permanently.
