    I dunno, the shallower content (weather, celebrity stuff, recipes, whatever) is what subsidizes the in-depth investigative reporting.  I wonder how many would pay for, say, a lengthy investigation of mismanagement of local mental health services.  And even if enough people pay to subsidize an investigative blogger, will it make a difference if only that small number of people read it?  Newspapers got the good content in front of a lot of eyes by using the other stuff to draw them in.
