    It will adapt to whatever circumstances it finds itself facing, even if it chooses to be a barren rock.

    The point is whether or not we humans will be able to thrive here. I don't think earth really cares if we do or not.

      is somewhat metaphoric -- what is really meant by "saving the Earth" is "avoiding the collapse of civilization which will be attendant upon drastic ecosystem simplification."

      I may look like a starry-eyed idealist, but down deep my concerns are just practical, mundane, and self-interested.

      All's I want is a planet people like me can live on, with some security and dignity, in a manner that preserves some measure of modernity, without very many people like me having to die to achieve it.

      Is that asking so much?

      PS Definition of "people like me" is: all people.
