  •  New legislation? (21+ / 0-)

On March 1st, I asked Senator Feingold if he'd be introducing a bill to trim the powers given the NSA last July. He told me he'd give the Administration "a few weeks' to submit a package before introducing his own.

    6 1/2 weeks later...

      •  What is that, the Obama unit? (3+ / 0-)

Anyway, I think this is a lost cause. I think the Administration sees this as an effective tool to fend off potential terrorist attacks and identify terrorist suspects. And they may be right.

I don't think it's going to go away ever.

The problem is of course that in the hands of an unscrupulous president it is potentially disastrous for our Democracy.

Does Obama and his administration think only righteous people rise to the pinnacle of power?

        •  Only righteous people do rise (0+ / 0-)

One just needs to be in the right company to heard it said.

However, I don't think Obama can possibly be that stupid, hypocritical or myopic. Which means he's probably not that righteous or scrupulous himself.

No one has ever demonstrated why the laws that Bush broke were insufficient to the threats of today. On the contrary, the only thing that you and I can be sure of is that they've made it very difficult to determine what they are doing to who and to what effect. It stunk like crime under Bush, and it stinks like crime under Obama. It's certainly anti-democratic.

I've read this same story. The Democrats in congress definitely should have fixed it during the FISA/Telecom immunity legislation process, when they had the numbers, opportunity, and public support (according to polls) to do so. This repeated lawbreaking by the NSA followed by commiseration and promises that it'll never happen again is like Lucy promising to let Charlie Brown really kick the football this time. The lesson should have been learned long ago.
