    two of my favorites: Sullivan's Travels and My Man Godfrey, but if you're talking about the depression era depression era films, you can't leave out two other Capra/Gary Cooper films: Meet John Doe and Mr Deeds Goes to Town (not the Adam Sandler version).

    As far as more contemporary depression era films, Ironweed (Nicholson, Streep and Tom Waits) is suitably depressing. Cinderella Man is more uplifting, but still portrays the era well.

    My parents we're 19 in 1929, so I heard a lot about the depression growing up. My mental image was always something like The Honeymooners on TV (Jackie Gleason), even though that's set in a later era.
