Apparently we're all gun-totin' fundies waving confederate flags just itchin' to bolt the Union. Except for us DFHs living in Austin. Apparently we need to be rescued and spirited to a saner state. Which one is still up for debate.

Through all your faults and all my complaints, I still love you.

But when Progressives, Scientists, Liberals and Clear-Thinkers in Texas DO NOT speak out locally like Molly Ivins did all her life, you are on your own.

I once had a professor, who came originally from Afghanistan, and he talked about the problem of being colonized or having one's culture usurped. First there are the collaborators who "give" your culture to the colonizers. Second, out of fear and oppression, the others shut up and appear to assent to the colonialization.

Likewise in Texas, Minnesota or anywhere else where Perryites, Bachmannites and other neocons, theocons and neo-fascists have "taken over", Progressives (etc.) have accepted being colonized by freepers, mega-churches and other hate groups.

Some Progressives, out of fear or greed, let this happen. They are the collaborators. Others, perhaps thinking that their jobs or families might be in jeopardy, went silent. Or at least, that is how it seemed to me during the worst of Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Gingrich, and Bush. Their minions literally colonized the media, bragging that they had won. Yet, Bush got fewer votes than Gore. What happened is that Texan, Minnesotan and other Progressives let it happen at the local level (I know that many major protests were on at a national level, but it didn't happen here, let me tell you, on my streets).

Finally, my professor said, what the "colonized" have to do is "counter-penetrate", essentially infecting the colonizers with ideas and products from the "colonized" culture (these are called memes) and getting the colonizers to "like" and "spread" the conquered people's memes in their own circles. And once the colonizers begin to spread the conquered cultural values (sometimes unwittingly, or as a result of seeing the value of doing so, as in "Prop 8 - The Musical," where equal marriage = $$$), colonialism implodes.

What that means for us is to "push back" vigourously against the colonizers. Yes, you might lose your job, you might risk your house, car, and even family, should the crazies decide to go after you. In countless places, this has happened. It has not happened so far in the USA, where fanatics, secessionists, cult groups, and fascist hate groups have been neutralized in the media.

I say, push back against Perry or Bachmann with your neighbors, your family, your friends, and, yes, even with your co-workers. Do weekends in red neighborhoods, or in her district, campaigning for their opponents, who WILL beat them.

Otherwise, Texan and Minnesota Progressives, don't complain about being mocked as nutty states. You let it happen, and so it's true. We got enough problems here in Illinois to take care of ourselves... Sheeesh...

      Ugh. --UB.
