    •  Good news, thanks (5+ / 0-)

"Today's ruling is vindication of the right to challenge indefinite detention," said Jonathan Hafetz, an American Civil Liberties Union National Security project lawyer and counsel in Jawad's habeas corpus case.

Habeas corpus is a long-standing legal principle by which people can challenge their imprisonment.

"A prompt habeas hearing is especially necessary because Mr. Jawad's mental and physical well-being continue to be jeopardized by the harsh conditions in which he is being held at Guantanamo. This order upholds Mr. Jawad's right to have his day in court," Hafetz said.

Jawad was 16 when arrested from under a collapsed wall. That was 6 or 7 yrs ago.

on that Somali pirate kid. If he's as young, poor, and uneducated as I suspect he is, this is not someone who should rot in one of our federal prisons for the rest of his life.

I really feel for the pirates.

For God's sake, all of Europe has been dumping their toxic waste on the Somali coastline!  The Somalo government is gone--totally gone.  Why shouldn't the pirates consider themselves to be their country's Marines?  They've depended on fishing in those waters for generations upon generations, and after the developed countries polluted them, why the hell would you expect them to do anything else besides grab what they can from any sonufagun rich enough to drive a boat through their waters?
