  •  I can't honestly see why he cares; he thinks that (3+ / 0-)

he is untouchable. Kissinger never went to jail, Nixon didn't either. We tend to throw the book at the middle management and let the architects go free. Besides, Cheney is theoretically at death's door. He isn't going to die in prison, not if our own national history is any guide.

And I can't honestly imagine that he cares about his "legacy."

Could it be that he actually believes that he is going to face prosecution? Or that he genuinely believes in the drivel he has been spouting for 50 years, about being the only one who can "protect America?"

    I find either explanation un-credible.

    President Barack Obama!

Still thinking.  He was described by close friends as a "changed man" early in the Bush the lesser presidency.  It may be that his paranoia (which is what they were referring to) is driving his behavior.  That fits with both of your dismissed speculative reasons.  Does it make them more believable?  If you say "Not really" I wouldn't disagree.

If torture is OK in retrospect, it is OK in prospect as well. That is who we now are.
